THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) lists the following Historic Weather Events for December 16:

December 16, 1835 Vermont’s bitterest daylight period; northwest gales swept entire state; temperature remained near -15° all day in all sections; minimum of -22° reported at Newbury that night.
