THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) says of October:

The tempered weather of October makes it the favorite outdoor month of the year across most of America, and nowhere is it held in greater esteem than by the residents of Vermont. The Green Mountains attract more one-day visitors in bright October than in any other month. The annual autumnal migration of foliage viewers is the direct result of the changes set in motion by the further decline of direct solar rays to a midmonth position over the Amazon Valley of Brazil. The diminished heat input causes the chlorophyll of the deciduous trees to cease functioning, resulting in green leaves transforming to a brilliant variety of reddish and yellow tints bedecking hill and valley. The mixture of flaming hardwoods with deep green pines creates striking contrasts across northern New England found nowhere else in the United States.
