THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) lists the following Historic Weather Events for September 16:

September 16, 1932
Tropical storm crossing Cape Cod produced heavy rains in Connecticut Valley, almost none in Champlain Valley: Bloomfield 2.70", Brattleboro 2.24", but only 0.06" at Burlington.

September 16, 1939
Burlington reached 92°, its latest 90° reading ever; East Barnet 96°, St. Johnsbury 95° during record late heat wave from 15th to 17th.
