THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) lists the following Historic Weather Events for July 14:

July 14, 1897
“The great storm of the 13th and 14th blighted the good crop prospects...This storm was of exceptionally violent character for the season”; Hartland reported 7.20", Burlington 6.01"; earth slide on Fayston Mountain, 120 acres fell 2,400 feet vertically.

*We leave the discrepancy between Ludlum's two-day total of 6.01" for Burlington and the National Weather Service's figures for July 13th and 14th to the superior research skills of weather historians.
