THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) says of June:

Each spring Vermonters have to endure successive disappointments when brief periods of balmy weather are routed by a shift of wind to the northerly quadrant, making “backward spring” conditions prevail. By the time June rolls around, however, the fluctuating battle between the forces of the north and the forces of the south has usually been decided in favor of the latter, and one can go about warm season activities without trepidation.
