May 19, 1780
Famous Dark Day in New England; noticed at sunrise at Pawlet; spread east during morning to Boston; candles needed to read; cast eerie, brassy hue on foliage and outdoor objects, attributed to smoke from forest fires in West.

May 19, 1883
“The most disastrous forest fire that ever occurred in state”; originated in vicinity of Groton in southern Caledonia Co.

May 19, 1982
Small tornado did structural damage at Island Pond; confirmed and photographed by Lyndon State College meteorologists.
