THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) says of May:

In view of its northern clime, most years in Vermont would be more in tune with nature if May Day was celebrated at the end of the month when the warming of the sun has actually produced a variety of flowers. In May the northward move of the direct rays of the overhead sun has progressed into the Caribbean Sea area, an advance of almost seven degrees during the month. The period of daylight between the rising and setting of the sun lengthens by another hour; by the end of the month we enjoy over fifteen hours of sunlight.
