THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) says of April:

“Oh the lovely fickleness of an April day.” The words of W. H. Gibson well express the contrariness of the weather elements in the first full month of spring. April often opens in the cold lap of a late winter and ends in the warm embrace of an early summer. Mud may be everywhere.

The sun accelerates its upward climb this month almost to a sprint, increasing by 10°15´, so that at noon over central Vermont on the fifteenth the sun stands about 54°30´above the horizon. The day lengthens by about 120 minutes, adding an hour more of daylight at each end.
