THE VERMONT WEATHER BOOK by David Ludlum (Vermont Historical Society, 1996) lists the following Historic Weather Events for February 8:

February 8, 1861
One of the coldest daytimes in Vermont history: Lunenburg read -40° at sunrise, -22° at 2 P.M., -30° at 9 P.M., with a mean of -30.6°; Burlington’s minimum of -32° was coldest minimum ever known.

NOTE: Ludlum's -32° minimum for Burlington derives from historical records that go back further than the official National Weather Service temperature records, which began in 1884.
