January 26, 1839
Great Southeasterly Storm and Thaw of 1839: a deep cyclonic storm over New York State caused a surge of southerly air that raised temperatures from below zero to the 50s; massive ice breakup caused high floods, with extensive damage to bridges, dams, mills, highways.
